Calling all coffee lovers, you may want to read this! Recent studies have shown that moderate coffee consumption may have protective skin health benefits such as decreasing your risk for the most common skin cancer encountered called basal cell carcinoma (BCC). More than 2 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the Unites States each year. This particular type of cancer develops mostly on sun-exposed areas such as the head and neck but can occur on any part of the body.
Researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School recently found that women who consumed at least three cups of coffee a day had a 20% decreased risk of developing BCC compared to women who consumed less than one cup a month. Interestingly, men who consumed the same amount only had a 9% lower risk of BCC. What is the science behind it? Well, little is still known regarding the mechanism of action and further studies are needed. While coffee consumption was associated with a significant decreased risk for BCC, other skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma were not affected by caffeine.
Bottom Line…a moderate amount of your favorite caffeinated coffee beverage may have great benefits to protect your skin.
