It doesn’t matter if you’re overweight or at the ideal weight, anyone can develop a double chin. Also known as submental fullness, a double chin can be particularly difficult to deal with. You can’t exactly exercise your chin and it often seems that dieting does nothing to get rid of the extra fat.
Fortunately, there’s an ideal treatment available for people dealing with that unwanted double chin. Kybella involves a series of injections in the chin area. The main ingredient in the injectable helps to destroy and dissolve extra fat called deoxycholic acid. If you want to learn more about Kybella, check out the answers to five common questions about it.
What Happens During Treatment?
During treatment with Kybella, a doctor injects the substance into the targeted area. How many injections you need during a treatment session depends on how much chin fat you have and want to get rid of. Some may only need a few injections, but it’s also possible for you to need as many as 50 injections under the chin. The entire process typically takes less than 20 minutes.
Although 50 injections does sound like a lot, many people don’t find the experience to be uncomfortable, since the needle is so small. There may be burning or stinging during the treatment. Usually, an ice pack helps to reduce any discomfort people feel while getting the injections.
How Does Kybella Work?
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid. The human body naturally produces deoxycholic acid, as it’s what breaks down fat cells. Once the acid destroys the fat cells, they don’t stick around. Your body works to flush them, creating a slimmer, more defined chin.
How Many Treatments Will You Need?
The number of treatments a person needs depends on a few things. How much fat you have underneath the chin influences the number of treatments you end up needing, for example. If you have a considerable amount of fat, you will need to schedule more treatments than someone with less fat.
The type of results you want also determines how many treatments you end up getting. If you’re looking for a very slight, subtle improvement, you might be happy after just a single treatment session or two. But if you want more noticeable, dramatic results, you’ll most likely want to schedule multiple treatments.
Generally speaking, treatment sessions should be scheduled at least a month apart. If you do decide to get multiple treatments, it’s recommended that you have no more than six. On average, most people will need between 2 to 4 treatments for satisfactory results. During the clinical trials for Kybella, just over half of all patients had six treatment sessions. Since the fat doesn’t return, once you’ve completed your treatment with Kybella, you don’t have to return.
Does Kybella Cause Side Effects?
Kybella can have a few side effects, but for most patients, those side effects are mild. The most common side effect is some swelling or bruising under the chin, in the area of the injection. If that happens to you, you can reduce the swelling and discomfort with an ice pack. Often, people are able to return to work or their other regularly scheduled activities right after their treatment.
It is possible for the injection to cause more severe side effects, usually associated with an injury to the nerve in the jaw or chin area. Serious side effects are very rare, though, and only occurred in a few patients out of 100. Side effects such as trouble swallowing or nerve injury in the jaw typically resolved on their own after a few weeks.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
Again, how long it takes to see results can vary from person to person. Many people start to notice that their chins are slimmer after the second or third treatment. Some might notice a more subtle change about a month after the first series of injections.
Although it can take some time for visible results to appear, once the results do show up, they tend to last. In some cases, people have been happy with the new shape and size of their chin years after their initial treatments.
