If your skin is looking dull, rough or just worn out, you might be feeling self-conscious about your appearance. It’s normal for the skin’s condition to change over time. Despite our best efforts, skin will eventually start to show the signs of age, environmental damage and other skin problems, resulting in poor tone, texture and appearance. Fortunately, there are so many options available for non-invasive skin resurfacing and rejuvenation, which are typically administered by cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Dr. Diane Walder is pleased to offer patients many effective treatment options in Miami, including eMatrix™ sublative rejuvenation, a gentle but powerful skin treatment.

What is eMatrix™ Sublative Rejuvenation?
One of the many skin resurfacing options available to patients, eMatrix™ stands out by offering impressive results with little downtime or discomfort. eMatrix™ sends fragmented bi-polar radiofrequency energy in a matrix form deep into the dermis of the skin, allowing skin around the disrupted tissues to remain healthy for accelerated healing time. The cells targeted by the matrix dots will help the skin to produce new, healthy skin cells and stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is an essential structural protein in the body which gives skin its supple, firm and youthful appearance. Unfortunately, collagen production slows down with age, and treatments like eMatrix™ can help to promote new collagen formation for healthier skin. eMatrix™ is a multi-treatment process which helps to keep each treatment minimally invasive, allowing patients to fit the treatments into everyday life.
The Benefits of eMatrix™
Sublative rejuvenation has many benefits to the skin. Patients can expect overall improvement in their complexion, skin tone and texture. However, eMatrix™ can also treat problems such as:
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Skin discoloration
- Brown spots
- Irregular texture
- Under-eye circles
- Stretch marks
- Sun damage
- Uneven skin tone
- Large pores
- Superficial skin lesions
Results vary from patient to patient, but most people who undergo a full series of treatments are very pleased with the overall skin improvement they notice from eMatrix™.
Who is a Good Candidate for eMatrix™?
eMatrix™ is a safe, FDA-approved treatment that is suitable for many different skin types. Good candidates for the procedure are adults with minor to moderate skin problems that can be addressed with sublative rejuvenation. Patients should have realistic expectations about the results of the treatment and must be willing to commit to a regular schedule of treatments until the series is finished. Only a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon can evaluate individual candidacy, which is one of the goals of the individual consultation. Patients should look over eMatrix™ before and after pictures prior to the consultation to get an idea of the level of improvement that can be expected following a full treatment series.

The eMatrix™ Procedure
eMatrix™ treatments are generally well tolerated, and most patients require no anesthesia during the procedure. There will be some minor discomfort (a warm, prickly sensation), but most patients feel that the results gained from the treatments are worth the minimal discomfort. During the procedure, a specialized hand piece is used to direct radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis. The energy passes through the top layer of skin, leaving it unharmed, and stimulates collagen and cell renewal deep beneath the skin. Each treatment typically takes less than 30 minutes.
Downtime & Recovery
Though eMatrix™ is a gentle treatment, patients can expect some mild side effects in the days following treatment. Some swelling will occur, but patients can control any side effects with prescribed creams and medications. These side effects will typically subside within 3-5 days after each treatment. Patients should plan to dedicate 48 hours to recovery after each treatment but can generally resume normal activities quickly. Makeup can be used after 48 hours to help camouflage any redness that remains.
eMatrix™ FAQs
What are the potential eMatrix™ risks and side effects?
eMatrix™ is a very safe procedure that is well tolerated by most patients. Because eMatrix™ leaves the top layer of skin largely intact, risks and side effects are minimal. Following treatment, patients can expect minor discomfort from skin swelling and roughness caused by the procedure, but these side effects are mild and easily controlled. Hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration) is very unlikely because the top layer of skin is not disturbed, but patients should take care to protect the skin from the sun to help prevent any problems.
Is eMatrix™ safe for people with dark skin?
Yes, almost all skin types can be treated with the eMatrix™ system. Unlike ablative treatments, which use lasers to treat the top layers of skin, sublative rejuvenation leaves the skin intact and directs energy into the dermis, greatly reducing the chances of discoloration following treatments. eMatrix™ can be a great alternative to laser treatments for patients with dark skin.

What areas of the body can be treated with eMatrix™?
The most common area for eMatrix™ treatment is the face since this is the most visible skin on the body and tends to age quickly. However, the procedure can also assist with reducing the appearance of stretch marks, which are often caused by weight loss or pregnancy and are often seen on the stomach and lower body. During your consultation, you will be able to discuss with your doctor which areas are appropriate for eMatrix™ treatments.
How many eMatrix™ treatments will I need?
Most patients should be prepared for a series of 3-5 treatments for good results. However, some patients will need more sessions in order to reach their treatment goals. Each session is spaced 4-6 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and the body to begin creating its own collagen.
What precautions should be taken following treatment?
Sun protection is very important following treatment, and patients should be diligent about using sunscreen throughout the treatment series and for several months afterward. Though hyperpigmentation is unlikely, sun damage can cause brown discoloration or other skin problems. Protecting the skin from the sun will also help preserve the overall longevity of the treatment.
How long will it take to see the eMatrix™ results?
Because the treatment is natural, using the body’s own collagen and cell renewal processes to rejuvenate the skin, results will appear gradually. Patients will see modest improvement quickly, but full results will only be seen once the treatment series is complete. Final results may take 6 months or more to become fully apparent.
