How Different Injections Work
There are many types of wrinkle injections, but some work differently than others. Botox®, the classic anti-wrinkle injection, works by limiting the movement of facial muscles, which smoothes dynamic wrinkles like frown lines and crow’s feet for several months. Fillers like Restylane, on the other hand, fill in wrinkles and add volume to the face, making it look more youthful and rejuvenated. Fillers are injected into the skin, while muscle relaxers are injected under the muscle.
Why Use More Than One?
Patients can sometimes benefit from being treated with more than one type of anti-wrinkle injection. For patients with a variety of wrinkling problems, or those with more extensive wrinkles, combination treatments can work quite well. The classic example is the frown lines between the eyes. These can first be treated with Botox® to relax the underlying muscle and prevent future creasing of the skin. However, when the frown line is more severe, some shadow of the line may still be present which can be addressed with follow-up treatment with fillers. In this way, combining treatments is the best way to effectively smooth the skin.
Common Treatment AreasSome of the most common areas people treat with injectables include:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
Safety
Most dermatologists and plastic surgeons agree that using a combination of fillers and other wrinkle injections is usually quite safe. Of course, it is important to come up with a plan with your doctor to make sure there are no major risks to approaching your facial rejuvenation this way. If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Seek Out a Specialist
If you are interested in using more than one type of filler to treat your facial wrinkles, it is essential that you seek out a skilled provider, such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Injections such as Botox® and fillers require skill and expertise to administer properly, and can easily produce poor outcomes if injected improperly. In addition, only a knowledgeable provider can advise you on which fillers are safe to use together and how to properly administer each injection to maximize results and ensure safety.
